Oh blog, I have forsaken thee

The following things are keeping me from updating this blog:

New job, new boyfriend, lots of new art, keeping track of art orders, weekly podcast, trips out of town, and trying to occasionally sleep on top of all that.

These are all good things though!

However, I am going to be honest and say I do NOT foresee DSG Vol 3 being out in time for Staple. Being unemployed for 2 months was the busiest time for me, and I haven't touched those pages since then. IF things call down, we'll see if I can get pen to paper again.

Nautilus! Rapidograph on paper.

I had a job interview on Friday for a painting instructor position, and I feel it went well. I'll know more this coming week.

The time goes.....

If you came over here from spill, WELCOME WELCOME.

How things are going: I'm looking for a new day job. Terrifying in this economy. I want that dream job, the one that allows me time to work on my art. But I also want to eat and pay rent, so...we'll see what happens.

DSG Volume three is kinda on pause while I work on looking for work. I'm 11 pages into the final chapter, out of 30 pages. I hope to have it out by March 2010 for the next Staple show. But, the future is currently uncertain.

Big news is how much stuff I've got over at etsy! Help the unemployed out!

Transfer in progress

I woke up this morning to find my name server transfer had gone through!! DSG is in the process of getting rebuilt, and I am a happy camper! There's still plenty of stuff that needs to be fixed, and the files transfer is going to take awhile, but MAN am I relieved. What a horror show.

DSG.COM is DOWN

www.deadsquirrelgirl.com is currently DOWN. It's a long story, but the gist is my old hosting company sucks, and I am breaking up with them.

I just signed up with hostmonster.com (where the Blue Genie site is currently located). Thus far, their customer service is excellent, and I am already happy.

I am not precisely sure how to transfer the site, and I can't do it until later this evening anyway. However, hostmonster seems to be able to walk me through it, so I am feeling good about that.

This is not what I needed on top of everything! But hopefully this will clear up all the problems I have had over the past few years with the previous company I was with. Seriously, I think that company must be some dude operating out of his mom's basement.

My friend Leon did a KICKASS drawing of me as Aeon Flux for the upcoming episode of the League of Extremely Ordinary Gentleman's Animation part 2 episode. Phenomenal.

Episode goes up Friday, check out past episodes: HERE

Haven't updated here in a long time. Because my life is all mad crazy right now.

DSG: It's slow going, but pencils and inks are down on 7 pages right now. Colors to start this coming week. It's been hard for me to get back into it, as the beginning of the story is a lot of recap and talking head panels, and it has not been challenging or exciting for me. I just got into the main meat of the story yesterday, so I see getting into it more from here.

My post-Staple vacation lasted longer than I had intended, but a happy result of that is being adopted by the fine folks of the League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen. New podcast of geekery every Friday. Thus far you can find me rambling in episodes: 4.5, 8, 8.5, 9, 10, 10.5, 12, 12.5, 13. Sometimes I yell.

I'm looking ahead to the Blue Genie Art Bazaar, and realizing it's about time to start planning for that. Squids and nautilus as usual, but I'd like a new creature for 2009. I'd also like to get some small original paintings done.

I post here slightly more often, if you REALLY want some real time updates on what I'm working on: Twitter. Oh yeah....you'll need to send me a friend request, I got too many creepy people following me and had to lock it down.

Dead Squirrel Girl Volume 3 is completely scripted, rewritten, thumbnailed and ready to go! I just started penciling. I am trying a new technique....inking with a lightbox. I am hoping this will mean losing less of the original line work in the scans. I finished inking page number 2 tonight, and it looks really clean, so I'm happy with it. The script is currently sitting at 29 pages. However, there will be a few one pagers, and lots of extras. My due date for myself is Christmas - in time for the Art Bazaar.....but like Volume 2, that's a cushion to make sure it's ready for Staple.

Also, I will be at MoCCA in New York City in a week and a half. VERY excited! Kate Beaton will be there! I will snatch up one of her books so fast and geek out on her. My friend and fellow cartoonist, Jen Vaughn will be there too. And of course, a trip to NYC is nothing without the lovely Eva Garrett....DRUNK BUFFY SLUMBERPARTY!! WOOOO!

Also, at the goading of a friend of mine....I am uploading my student films onto youtube. They haven't seen the light of day in ten years. Bringing back the memories! Some of them are still pretty good. Some....not so much. Sorry world, I have unleashed some beasts!

I fainted Saturday morning at the Farmer's Market from heat stroke. It was super freaking fun, and not at all morbidly embarrassing. So, that's where this comes from. The sunburn is on the mend, but still very annoying.

The Geek Girls podcast went up today! I have not gotten a chance to listen to it yet, and I know I was fairly intoxicated by the evening's end, so hopefully no regrets will be had when I get the opportunity to listen to the whole thing. It's probably something like 2 hours long......

Things to look for and things to listen to

A) Next month (supposedly, if it doesn't get pushed back again), the anthology Sugar & Spice should be in production. This is an all-girls comics anthology being put together by my old professor, Bob Pendarvis. There is a new 4 page Dead Squirrel Girl comic in it....by "new" I mean I just drew it, but the script itself is actually from 1998. It was so fantastic to pull from those early days of DSG when it was just about short gags. It's a B&W book, and should be available in most book stores, more details when they come.

B) This coming Friday, I will be hanging with The League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen for their "Geek Girls" episode. They are going to let us take over the show, I haven't met most of the other ladies yet, but I'm sure they will be lovely. The show itself will not go up until the following week, but you'll hear it from me when it does. Listen to Kristin get tipsy and talk nerdy.

I've been on a long break from comics and the like, I needed to rest from Staple. But it seems life's distractions are coming to an end, and I am willing to get back into the saddle again. I'm about to finish off a batch of new brocade squids, and sometime soon I will rewriting the final chapter of the squid saga that will appear in DSG Volume 3.

Ikeasaurus

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to share this very special squid. This squid was made for part of the Ike-a-saurus auction being held here in Austin. Ike is an infant who has come down with some serious health issues. To make matters worse, his father was recently laid off, causing the family to lose their health insurance.

The Austin Mamas group has stepped forward and set up this auction to help the family out. Please go over the the site, read up on the little guy, and maybe even consider a bid.

If you're not into hearing me complain, by all means SCROLL elsewhere. But I have to unleash this fury somewhere, or I'm gonna wind up shoving old ladies into the road.

It's RARE that I am angry. VERY few friends have seen me mad. But right now I'm downright FURIOUS. I was SUPPOSED to go into the woods to enjoy a peaceful weekend, away from people. What I wound up with was bullshit and an even deeper loathing for humanity.

Here are the reasons you should avoid Pacebend Park at all costs:

1) FILTHY. There is trash everywhere. Lake is full of beer cans and other gross things.
2) Broken glass everywhere. Especially along the hiking trails.
3) Giant holes in the charcoal pits.
4) Absolute incompetence on behalf of the Travis County parks system. When I called to make a campsite reservation, they told me I had to PHYSICALLY go downtown to their office and pay them. I did that. NOT ONCE did they happen to mention that TENT camping did not require a reservation. So, I paid them $10, apparently for an RV site which they did NOT tell me that's what I was paying for. THEN, I got to Pacebend, and they charged me ANOTHER $20. $30 to set up a tent?? BULLSHIT! When I got all my paperwork together, and took a look at everything I realized what had gone horribly wrong, so I went back up to the office to complain. They told me to go back to the Travis County office tomorrow. WTF. How about you just give me the $15 you owe me, BITCH.
5) Assholes having an incredibly loud conversation until 3 AM.
6) Another asshole across the river had their radio on to volume 11 from 4-6:30 AM.
7) The lady at the front booth absolutely FAILED to give me a map! Tyler and I got really lost on the hiking trail, and I seriously thought he was going to collapse and die, and I would have to haul my poor old dog's body out of the woods. We walked for 1.5 hours until we found a road, and I didn't even know if we were still on the property or not. Eventually we found our camp site, and only because I knew to head in the direction of the setting sun.
8) NO ONE told me Travis County had a burn ban! Not a PEEP when I made reservations. What's the point of camping without a fire?!
9) Drunk morons on their boats on the lake singing at the top of their lungs to horrible country music.

The next time Enchanted Rock is booked up, I am not going to settle for some other camp ground. For the amount of time and money that was wasted, I could have just driven the 3 hours out to the Y.O. Ranch, where it would have been dead silent, and I could have done whatever the hell I wanted. I should have just stayed home and gone camping in Hyrule instead. BOOOOOO.

I won't be there, but you should be.

A SHOW OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS

I guess my painting is more or less done for this show, but I have to say I'm really not a fan of it. Something could have been better, something could have been pushed further, only I don't know what. I think I just got bored with it. I'll include some pics soon, gotta wait til it's sunny to photo it.

As I'm sure I've previously stated, I won't be in town for the opening, as I'll be visiting my grandma in Florida. But that shouldn't stop you from going!

Austin Handmade Release party

The release party was an interesting little low-key shindig. For the record: I am still allergic to wine, and will be paying that off by sneezing a lot today. A lot of people I did not know came....I think they came to hear the two musical acts. So, I was kinda a wallflower, but then my peeps showed up. Alan Porter and his lovely wife came, which was super nice of him. And my Blue Genie boys showed up, and I love them.

Here's the custom wine label:

And here's me and my boys. (Don't you like how I'm the one that's lit the best and most in focus?)
